About My Poems

Haiku-style poems in triptych allow me to distill the Multiple Sclerosis experience into very few words. While these often nontraditional haikus have journal-like qualities, they are not my daily journal. They merely represent what I or someone I know will have experienced on the MS journey. Poems published on Mondays will generally focus on nature.
My poems will span
the emotional spectrum.
That is what I live.

A smile may lift me
past my MS challenges.
I share that with you.

Sometimes sadness trumps
easy laughter and resolve.
I will write then too.

If Only ...

If only I could
join those who dash by me
rushing to something.

If only they knew,
one step seems like a mile
when I start walking.

It is the freedom
whether to run or saunter
I miss most of all.

I prefer to saunter, but I would like a choice.

I remember the weeks spent in a wheel chair like it was yesterday, which might be the reason why I try to do as much walking as possible. Then again it is due to the MS that I have found a hobby, where I can sit down while doing it - running used to be every morning... if I even attempt running I fall within split seconds. Why is it often the case, that you don't cherish your abilities until you actually (temporarily) loose them?

I sometimes feel like a traffic cone as people pass me on either side. Ahhh, the good old days of being able to walk normally at any speed!
Peace,
Muff

I hear you Judy...and I have to agree with Karen, I prefer to saunter, always have...but a choice would be such a blessing.

Karen, Anne, Gail, Muff, and Laura,

It is hard to underestimate the impact of losing the ability to walk normally. It affects every part of life. A traffic cone is right. I was always more a fast walker than one who sauntered, but I would settle for sauntering now. The choice has been wrested from me though. Damn.
