My 180 vs. half mile per hour speed data come from the Dec 09 issue of Discover magazine, "The Brain" by Carl Zimmer. They represent the endpoints for each speed, highest at 180 mph for myelinated nerves, lowest at 1/2 mph for demyelinated nerves. The restrictions of the haiku form did not allow me to add this additional information. The point holds, though, and that is the significant reduction in nerve transmission speed.

Thanks Have Myelin and Mary. This does explain a lot. It is all in my head but not in a psychological way. It's that myelin or lack of it that explains so much.
